Alpha Read
An Alpha Reader is the first person to see your work after you finish. This can be before or after some self-editing but before any professional editing or intensive self-editing is done. This type of read is to give you a head start into the editing process by highlighting any issues from a readers perspective early on in a readers report of your work.
Beta Read
A Beta Reader will read your work after some editing and revision has taken place. Perhaps after working with an alpha reader and making revisions or a intensive self-edit to highlight any remaining issues and give you an impression of your work from a readers point of view in a readers report of your work.
Developmental/Story Edit
A Developmental or Story Edit is an in depth review of your work. This means going through your work line by line with an analytical eye looking for issues with plot, characters, form, structure. This focuses on the same things as an Alpha/Beta read but takes it to the next level providing line comments and a reader report to help you really polish your work to be the best it can be.
